In twenty years of supporting small offices, the plan question I hear most is not about models. It is about who owns the chats and who pays when someone leaves. ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Business look like the same chat window with a different price tag, and they are not the same product. This guide follows the searches people run next on Google (pros and cons, cost, subscription, Codex limits and the Plus price) and answers each from OpenAI's own Help Center pages, checked on October 28, 2026. Plans, seat prices and limits change often, so treat every number below as a snapshot.
- Just you, personal or public information: ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month is the simpler plan. OpenAI says personal Plus chats can be used to improve models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone".
- Two or more people, or any client data: ChatGPT Business. A Standard seat is $25 per user per month, or $20 per user per month billed annually, with a two-seat minimum. OpenAI says it does not train on Business workspace data by default.
- Heavy Codex or ChatGPT Work use: Premium seats at $125 per month, or $100 billed annually, with 5x the included usage of Standard and no five-hour limit.
- The trade-off: Business needs at least two paid seats and has no self-service data export for members. Plus has no annual billing.

ChatGPT Business vs ChatGPT Plus Pros and Cons

OpenAI describes ChatGPT Plus as a subscription for the ChatGPT web app at $20 a month. Its Help Center lists priority access during high-traffic periods, higher model limits than the Free plan, advanced reasoning options, faster responses, voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, and Deep Research tools where available. The same page warns that Plus can include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand, and says model availability changes during rollouts, so the model picker on your account is the final word.
Pros of Plus: the lowest entry price, no minimum number of users, and nothing to administer. Cons of Plus: it is a personal subscription, so central billing, user roles and workspace controls are not part of it, and OpenAI lists no annual billing option for it.

ChatGPT Business is the shared-workspace version. OpenAI lists a secure environment for collaboration, centralized billing across users, admin controls for users, roles and access, usage visibility and spend controls, and access to Codex and ChatGPT depending on seat type. A Standard seat also includes ChatGPT Work and features such as GPTs, Projects, Apps, Company Knowledge, ChatGPT Agent and Deep Research. Members keep their own chat history and choose what to share, and by default admins cannot read other members' private chats.
Pros of Business: one bill, one place to add and remove people, and a data-handling promise that suits company work. Cons of Business: a two-seat minimum, a cap of 200 paid seats per subscription for workspaces created from August 24, 2026, no self-service data export, and no way to turn shared links off completely, which OpenAI says is an Enterprise control. Teams that need invoice billing, purchase orders, wire transfer, Zero Data Retention or BAAs are told to use a contracted offering instead of the self-serve plan.
ChatGPT Business vs ChatGPT Plus Cost

Here are the prices OpenAI lists in US dollars, which it says may vary by country and currency. The yearly figures are my own arithmetic from those list prices, not numbers OpenAI prints.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 per month | Not offered | 1 user |
| Business Standard seat | $25 per user per month | $20 per user per month, billed annually | 2 seats in total |
| Business Premium seat | $125 per user per month | $100 per user per month, billed annually | 2 seats in total |
Because of the two-seat minimum, the smallest Business workspace is two Standard seats, which is $50 a month on monthly billing or $480 a year on annual billing by my math. Two Plus subscriptions would be $40 a month, so on annual billing the per-person price is the same, and monthly billing adds $5 per person for the shared workspace, central billing and the privacy defaults. A seat is paid capacity, separate from the person using it, and the owner can assign or reassign it. One Standard seat and one Premium seat also satisfy the minimum.

Changing seats has rules. Only workspace owners can buy, add, reduce, assign or change seat types. Adding a paid seat triggers an immediate prorated charge for the rest of the billing cycle, and reductions take effect at the start of the next cycle. OpenAI says unused seats do not by themselves qualify for a refund after the workspace commits to the seat count for that cycle, and that assigning or swapping already-paid seats adds no charge.

ChatGPT Plus Price

OpenAI's Help Center lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, billed monthly, available on the ChatGPT website and supported apps. API usage is not included and is billed separately. The page also answers the annual question directly: it says OpenAI does not support annual billing or paying several months in advance for Plus.

One more Plus detail matters for developers. OpenAI says eligible Plus subscribers can let participating tools use their included allowance through "Sign in with ChatGPT", but only after approving the request, and this does not allow sharing account credentials or reselling access. Usage in a connected tool draws from the same allowance, so it does not create a second one.

ChatGPT Business Subscription

If you remember ChatGPT Team, it is the same plan. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025, existing Team workspaces became Business workspaces, and the rename itself did not change features, pricing or usage limits. Later seat and price changes, such as Premium seats, are separate from the rename.

A Business workspace is built around two seat types. Standard seats include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex with baseline usage, and you can buy workspace credits for usage beyond the included limits. Premium seats include all the same access with higher usage limits. A workspace can mix both types under one subscription.

OpenAI also lists limits on the plan itself. Starting August 24, 2026, a subscription can hold up to 200 paid seats in total, and workspaces created before that date keep their previous limit. If you need more, OpenAI points to ChatGPT Enterprise. A Business subscription does not include API usage, which is billed separately, and the API's credits and rate limits do not transfer into a Business workspace.

ChatGPT Plus vs Business Codex Limits
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. OpenAI's Codex help page says Codex is included across ChatGPT plans, including Free and Go, with usage limits that vary by plan, and that Codex Cloud is available to eligible Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Education accounts but not to Free or Go. For Plus, OpenAI's Business limits page adds that Plus plans include GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI's Codex page does not print a fixed Plus message count and sends readers to its pricing page for current limits, so I will not quote one.

For Business, OpenAI is more specific. Premium seats include 5x more usage than Standard seats and are not subject to a five-hour usage limit. When a seat's included usage runs out, eligible usage can continue on purchased workspace credits if the workspace has credits and its spend controls allow it. OpenAI also warns that a longer task uses more of the allowance than a short one, so a fixed message count is not a reliable measure of what is left.

OpenAI's estimates for Standard seats, shown as allowed local messages per five-hour window, are in the table below. Actual usage varies by model and task, and cloud chats can use more than local messages.
| Model | Standard seat, local messages per 5 hours |
|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | 5 to 45 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol | 15 to 150 |
| GPT-6.1 Terra | 35 to 285 |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | 10 to 100 |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | 25 to 200 |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | 250 to 2,000 |

Chat has its own allowance for the top reasoning model. GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is available to Business users: Standard includes 15 Pro messages per month and Premium includes 50 Pro messages per week, each shared between GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. OpenAI says these Chat allowances are separate from Work and Codex usage, and that "Pro" is a model option, not another name for a Premium seat.

The "unlimited" wording needs care. OpenAI says virtually unlimited access applies to Instant chat and remains subject to safeguards against misuse. It does not make reasoning, Pro, ChatGPT Work, Codex or other tools unlimited, and automatic reasoning can use your reasoning allowance even while Instant is selected.
Does Plus or Business Train on Your Chats?

This is the biggest practical difference. OpenAI's data controls page says that on personal workspaces with ChatGPT Free, Plus or Pro, data sharing is enabled by default, and you can turn off "Improve the model for everyone" while keeping your chat history. With that setting off, new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models. The same page notes that if you give thumbs up or thumbs down feedback, the whole conversation tied to that feedback may be used for training.

For managed workspaces the default is the opposite. OpenAI says that by default it does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces to train its models, and its Codex page says the same about Business inputs and outputs. That page also says Plus and Pro conversations may be used to improve models unless you turn training off in data controls.

Temporary chat is available as a middle path on personal plans. OpenAI says temporary chats do not appear in your history, do not create or update memories, are not used to improve models, and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Inside a Business workspace, collaboration has limits by design. Each user has their own chat history, shared links work only for members of the same workspace, and usage analytics are separate from access to chat transcripts. OpenAI's Business privacy page also says members cannot export their own workspace data through settings, and workspace owners can export a member's data when the option is available.
Credits and Spend Controls on Business

Spend controls are one reason finance teams like a managed plan. OpenAI says workspace credits can cover eligible usage after a seat's included usage is exhausted, purchased credits are valid for 12 months, and an owner can turn on automatic reload with a minimum balance, a target balance and an optional monthly recharge limit. Owners and admins can set monthly credit limits by seat type and per-user overrides. By default, seats and users have no limits specified, so set them on day one if you want a ceiling.
ChatGPT Plus vs Business on Reddit? How to Read Forum Advice
Forum threads on this topic mix personal experience with plan details that change quickly. Before you trust a post, check whether it names the plan, the date, and whether it was written before or after the Team to Business rename and the arrival of Premium seats. Then compare any claim about limits, prices or privacy with the OpenAI Help Center pages linked in this guide. A lived experience of how a plan feels can still help, as long as the numbers come from the vendor.
Moving From Plus to Business

If you already pay for Plus and your company opens a Business workspace, you do not have to merge anything. OpenAI says you can keep your personal workspace separate and switch between the two, and any personal subscription continues until you cancel it. If you choose to merge, an active personal subscription is automatically canceled and the unused portion refunded, except for subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store or Google Play, which you must cancel there.

Merging has consequences. The migration copies supported content, you cannot pick individual chats, projects or files, and there is no undo that moves Business content back into your personal workspace. Sites do not transfer. Your personal workspace is deactivated and hidden from the workspace switcher, but its data is not deleted. Other Business members do not automatically see your private chats.
Which One Should You Choose?
A solo writer or student: Plus, with "Improve the model for everyone" turned off if you paste anything private. A freelancer with client files: a two-seat Business workspace is the cleaner choice if client contracts allow it, because the training default is off and billing is separate from your personal account. A small team of five to fifteen: Business Standard seats, spend limits set on day one, and Premium only for the one or two people who run agents all day. A company that needs invoices, purchase orders or Zero Data Retention: not self-serve Business, according to OpenAI, which points those buyers to a contracted offering.

Final Recommendation
If you work alone and your inputs are public or low risk, ChatGPT Plus is the cheaper and simpler plan, as long as you review the data controls. If two or more people share work, or any customer or staff information goes into prompts, choose ChatGPT Business, start with Standard seats, set spend limits, and add Premium only where usage proves it. Before you pay, open the model picker, pricing page and limit notices in your own account, because OpenAI changes plans often.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT Business the same as ChatGPT Team?
Yes. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025, and existing Team workspaces became Business workspaces. The rename itself did not change the plan.
Can one person buy ChatGPT Business?
OpenAI says a Business workspace requires at least two paid seats in total, which can be two Standard seats, two Premium seats or one of each. A single person who wants one account would use a personal plan such as Plus.
Is ChatGPT Plus cheaper than ChatGPT Business?
Per person, Plus is $20 a month. A Business Standard seat is $25 a month on monthly billing or $20 per user per month billed annually, and the workspace needs two seats. Prices are in USD and can vary by country.
Does ChatGPT Business use my data to train models?
OpenAI says it does not use content from ChatGPT Business workspaces to train its models by default. Personal Plus chats can be used unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in data controls.
Can I move my Plus chats into a Business workspace?
Yes, through the merge option in Settings under Data controls while the Business workspace is selected. OpenAI says supported content is copied, you cannot choose individual chats, and there is no undo.
Do Plus or Business include the API?
No. OpenAI says API usage is separate and billed independently for both Plus and Business, and API credits do not transfer into a Business workspace.
What happens if my Business subscription is canceled?
OpenAI says a workspace may be deactivated after cancellation. Deactivation does not delete workspace data, but members lose access until a workspace owner reactivates it.
